DEAPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Archaeology was established in 1960. Apart from regular B.A (Hons) , M.Phil and Ph.D. degree programs, the Department is engaged in extensive and intensive field oriented research throughout the province. This research has added new chapters to our cultural history. One of the greatest achievements of the Department has been the construction of a beautiful museum, which houses a huge collection of antiquities excavated by the staff and students since its inception. The Department publishes a research bulletin, Ancient Pakistan, that includes research articles and excavation reports.

Archaeology

Message:

Staff and students of this Department feel pride in its strong foundation of teaching and research laid by its founding staff Professor (Dr.) Ahmad Hasan Dani, Professor (Dr.) Farzand Ali Durrani, Professor Farid Khan, Professor (Dr.) Abdur Rahman and Professor Fidaullah Sehrai. They untiringly worked hard to establish the first ever teaching Department among all others in Universities of the country and made it recognized by teaching and research of high standing world widely.

My appeal to the Faculty and students of this Department is to keep up the hardly earned name of this Department by the above mentioned torch-bearers who happen to be the beacon of light and rightly to be followed in their footsteps not only to carry their missions forward in the diverse fields of the discipline of Archaeology but also as good human beings as a priceless legacy they left for us.

Let us make a pledge that we shall follow them in letter and spirit and work for the betterment of the humanity by preserving the golden common human heritage.

Vision:

Pakistan happens to be a country of rich archaeological heritage by default. This Department, being a part of higher education system, would stress on producing skilled graduates who after absorbed as useful members of the society would work for the preservation and promotion of tangible cultural heritage of the country. This will not only ensure the positive image of the people but also add to the promotion of foreign exchange by attracting tourists from all over the places from in and abroad.

Since its establishment in 1962, the Department has been imparting quality education in different fields of Archaeology and providing skilled personnel to the society. It also endevours to arouse awareness among the masses to preserve our rich tangible cultural heritage on one hand and the spirit of promoting research on the other. We also aim at establishing the Institute of Archaeology to promote knowledge at an advanced level. The Department also trains students in co-curricular activities making them more refined and confident to take an active part in their social life.
