INTRODUCTION :

The dawn of independence opened a new era of Library and Information science education in Pakistan. Llibrary of the University of Peshawar started functioning in-1951. Academic faculties and their libraries needed trained library scientists that pushed the need forward for establishing department of Library& Information Science which was established in 1962, to cope with all future needs.

It started postgraduate diploma course, DLS (now BLISc). Inspite of lack of funds, teaching staff, building, etc, the Master Degree Program me in Library and Information Science was started in 1983-84. Since its inception, the department has produced 945 library and information graduates. The Department is located on the 1st store in the newly constructed building of the Faculty of Arts.

MESSAGE:

The Department of Library & Information Science, as a counterpart of the Faculty of Management and Information Sciences, University of Peshawar is enjoying its present status of a full-fledged department right from the Year 1983-84. Among the various other objectives of the department the most important one is to balance the ratio of supply and demand of professional librarians. The in time supply of trained Library & Information Science graduates with modern devices enables the people of community to avail the maximum utility of their assets from Library or Information Centres. The out going product and Alumni of this department are serving the masses at provincial; Federal and International level with the best of confidence. The department has so far produced more than two thousands postgraduate professionals with the degrees of Diploma, Bachelors and Masters in Library and Information Science. The department according to its order of seniority in the country is ranked as number three, rest of the six departments of various universities are junior to the department of university of Peshawar, established in the year 1962 (as a part time programme). Keeping in view the job attraction, scope and demand every year more than a thousand of applications are received for BLISc(now MA Previous) in the Directorate of Admissions, University of Peshawar, out of which only 124 could be accommodated. The admitted candidates are mostly first class graduates. Being a biggest department of the faculty/University with the enrollment of 124 students of BLISc (now M.A Previous)(evening and morning), and the same number for MLISc, the department has to cater a heavy workload for teachers and teaching. Faculty of this department comprising of four lecturers and two assistant professors is looking after the department under the supervision of Dean, Faculty of Management and Information Sciences. Mutual cooperation and understanding of the faculty is guarantee of its success. The department, keeping pace with other sister departments is conducting examinations, organizing Seminars/Workshops/Symposiums and looking after the admission process, Board of Studies, short/long study and excursion tours with full confidence.

To my mind, there is no field of national endeavour more important than EDUCATION and I am particularly happy to be associated with this venture in quality professional education. This is the way into the 21 st century and the years beyond. We are in it, and we shall march on, our human endeavour seeking also the grace of God.

At the end let me close by saying that without the continuing support of higher authority, students and faculty members, we would have not been able to achieve all this.

VISION FOR THE FUTURE:

1. To prepare library professional by providing professional education and preparing them to meet the challenges of information explosion and its control at all levels.
2. To provide quality education in the field of library and information science by utilizing all electronic and non-electronic means.
3. To prepare students to assure a wide variety of services and leadership positions in libraries and information centers.
4. To prepare skilled professional library information science specialists who are cognizant of their importance in a diverse, rapidly changing global society.
