INTRODUCTION :-

Established in 1962, the Department of Political Science is one of the oldest teaching department of the University of Peshawar. Prof. Dr. Mrs. Afsar Saleem was one of the pioneering founders who undertook much struggle for the establishment of the department. The learned professor had a team of over-zealous faculty members who extended all out support to her in those early years when the department had no building of its own. Among those dedicated personalities, the names of Prof. Dr. Asrar Hussain, Dr. Mohammad Riaz of Law College and Prof. Dr. Raja Mohammad Naib will always be remembered who left no stone unturned in strengthening the foundation of the department and raising its standard of excellence.

In 1974, courses of International Relations and Public Administration were introduced. The rapid development soon necessitated bifurcation and the result was the birth of two separate departments in 1982 namely the Department of International Relations and that of the Public Administration (currently the Institute of Management Studies). The department has been catering to the needs of young students of the N-W.F.P in the science of politics so as to enable them to enrich and broaden their understanding of politics and thus become responsible citizens of Pakistan. The department is proud of supplying enormous manpower resources to the prestigious civil service of Pakistan. Departments’s Website is www.dops.edu.pk

MESSAGE:-

The session ending on 15 th June, 2007 was a success. The university administrations’ initiatives made the session a wonderful experience. These initiatives such as weekly tutorial classes / holding of departmental seminars were found much contributory towards the improvement of teaching-learning process. Despite the fact that the session was innovative in nature, there is still room for improvement. The undersigned calls upon both the teachers and the taught to work together for meeting the challenges that lie ahead. While the university administration under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Dr. Haroon Rashid has been extending all out support (Moral and material) and cooperation to the constituent departments, it is for us to seek maximum benefits from such endeavors. The vice chancellor’s vision to turn University of Peshawar into a world class institution can materialize only if we (teachers and students of Political Science) work honestly and dedicatedly to achieve new heights of excellence in academics.

VISION FOR THE FUTURE:-

To make Political Science as one of the leading departments of the University of Peshawar. The needed talent and opportunities would be made available. A conducive academic environment will be created where youth of the nation in general and those of the frontier province in particular could be proud of seeking knowledge for their masters’ and research degrees in Political Science.
