INTRODUCTION :-

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is a leading institution of the University of Peshawar. With the grace of Allah Almighty, it has touched the high peak of success in a very short span of time after its establishment. This Department has the honour to award B.A(Hons), Master and M.Phil/Ph.D degrees in the disciplines of Sociology and Anthropology. Anthropology was started in 1983 in the Department of Social work. The department of Social Work was re-designated as the Department of Social work, Sociology & Anthropology. Professor Karam Elahi patronized Sociology and Anthropology, getting its independent status as a full-fledged department in 1992. Research activities for the students of M.A and M.Phil/Ph.D Sociology are compulsory while in B.A(Hons) Anthropology, the students have the choice to opt for Viva Voce examination on overall aspects of subject concerned.

Similarly, field work in the M.A & M.Phil/Ph.D Sociology and Anthropology is compulsory in those areas of the Province, which are sociologically and anthropologically significant. Field work carries 20 marks which are added to the paper of community development.

Development, which deals with the updated participatory approaches followed by field work of 20 marks at various non-governmental organizations and other relevant agencies working for multi dimensional development of the community. The Department also offers M.Phil and Ph.D courses in Sociology whereas M.Phil programme in Anthropology is under active consideration. The Department has a rich library with relevant and updated books on major social issues.

Admission Criteria:-

1. 1 st Priority: Atleast 45% marks in BA as well in the subject of Psychology, Applied Psychology.
2. 2 nd Priority: 2 nd Class BA with at least 45% marks in Philosophy, Social Work, Sociology, Home Economics, Education
