Department of Zoology

INTRODUCTION :-

The department of zoology was established in 1963 with only two faculty members, Prof. Syed Mohammed Ahmad and Prof. Muhammad Nasim Siddiqi. It started its classes in the zoology department of lslamia College, from where it moved to the present premises in 1964. The first batch of students graduated in 1965. It is the only institution in NWFP, which offers academic program leading to M.Sc. degree in zoology. Before the establishment of the department, the students intending to study zoology had to go to other provinces. As a result, there were hardly more than a dozen bonafide residents of this province with M.Sc. degree in zoology at the time of establishment of this department. Today, this province is self-sufficient in so far as the manpower in the field of Zoology is concerned.

Graduates from the department are employed in Colleges, Universities, Wild-life, Fisheries, Forestry, Pakistan Science Foundation, Museum of Natural History, Civil Service, Banking, Police Service, Army, PAF, Pharmaceutical Industries, National Institute of Health, National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Center of Excellence in Molecular Biology, etc.

The department has an open-shelf seminar library having more than 5000 text and reference books, besides monographic works, annual reviews, advances in various sub-divisions of zoology and a broken series of research journals. The department is maintaining a sizeable museum of natural history, meant for teaching and research. The department holds regular conferences and teacher training workshops. The faculty and the students actively participate in the Pakistan Congress of Zoology, which is regularly organized by the Zoological Society of Pakistan every year. Students also take part in training courses on practical fisheries and Aqua culture. Recently, the enrolment in B.Sc. (Hons) has been increased to a maximum of 30 seats each year. Admissions are made on the basis of marks obtained in B.Sc. with zoology.
