Centre of Biotechnology |
The Centre of Biotechnology was established in April, 2001 by the University of Peshawar with the approval of Federal Government. The first batch of 80 students in Bachelor of Biotechnology and 9 scholars in M.Phil. Biotechnology were admitted in November, 2001. Besides its own staff, experience teaching, staff has been engaged from other department. The Centre is a teaching, training and research pivot in biotechnology for the province. It serves as permanent base for producing trained manpower by imparting education and conducting research on the local problems. It aims to maintain a gene bank and mass-produce DNA enzyme for their ready availability and use by various research groups.
It will serve as a repository of cloning vehicle and vectors for use in genetic engineering experiments. The main thrust area are to select and identify elite medicinal species of this region and mass culture plant cells for enhanced production of pharmaceutically important substances. Another area of interest is the use of in vitro biotechnology for the induction of stress tolerance in important crops and to transfer them to the stressed environment for commercialization. It further aims to devise protocols for mass propagation of important tree species to overcome deforestation, environmental degradation, preservation of Biodiversity, endangered and medicinalspecies. The centre has an excellent facility in Plant Tissue Culture. The students have established “Society for Biotechnology and Biotechnology Seminar Forum”. The centre holds regular weekly seminars in which eminent scholars are invited for lecture/ discussion. |
Bachelor of Biotechnology Programme:
It’s a four-year programme. The students are admitted after passing Higer Secondry School Examination in Science F.Sc. on self-support basis. The rules/regulations and syllabi are available in the Centre of Biotechnology.
Career Opportunities:-
The out going graduates will be well trained in solving their local problems by applying biotechnological skills gained in this centre. The graduates will have the opportunities to be absorbed in an array of professional groups including agriculture, health, education, industry, veterinary, medical and environmental sectors. At the moment there is an excellent market at home and abroad for the graduates. |
